Heck of a Climb Challenge (Formerly King or Queen of the Mountain)
The Heck of a Climb Challenge pays tribute to Ray Heck, a beloved Redbud Board Member and passionate cyclist who helped shape the cycling community in Oklahoma. Ray created the original King and Queen of the Mountain Challenge as a fun and competitive way to celebrate the strength and spirit of Redbud riders during the 50-Mile Fondo ride.
In his honor, the challenge now carries his name. Cyclists who take on the Heck of a Climb Challenge will have their segment time tracked during their 50-mile ride, with awards for the top male and female finishers. Whether you’re chasing the fastest time or simply testing your limits, we invite you to climb in Ray’s memory and carry forward his love of the ride.
The segment, which is an uphill climb, begins just South of Memorial Road on Triple X Road and concludes just before Britton Road. The segment will be timed using the same bib/chip you are given at packet pick-up. There is no need to track this yourself on STRAVA and turn it.
We look forward to seeing all of you who accept the Heck of a Climb Challenge.

Heck of Climb Challenge Rules:
- A custom trophy will be awarded to the male and female with the lowest overall time taken to complete the 2.8-mile segment.
- Those who wish to compete must be registered for the 2026 Redbud 50-Mile Fondo on April 11th, 2026.
- The timed segment must be completed during the Redbud 50-Mile Fondo on April 11th, 2026.
- No electric bikes allowed.
- Participants must be 18 years or older.
Cycling Etiquette
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the importance of safety, adherence to local traffic laws, and proper cycling etiquette. Police officers and course marshals will be stationed at key intersections to assist with traffic control and provide cyclists with the right of way where applicable. However, many rural intersections will not have traffic support. It is your responsibility to proceed cautiously and never assume you have the right of way. Here are some key safety reminders:
- Stop Signs & Yielding: Oklahoma law allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs when it is safe to do so. This means you may proceed without stopping only if the intersection is clear. However, some cyclists may stop while others continue moving, so be aware of your surroundings and ride predictably to avoid confusion or collisions.
- Ride on the Right: Stay to the right side of the road to maintain a predictable flow of traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. • Riding Two Abreast: You may ride two abreast where it is safe, but when vehicles approach, it’s courteous and often required by law to ride single file to allow them to pass safely.
- Visibility & Signaling: Clearly signal turns and lane changes to communicate your intentions to both motorists and fellow cyclists.
- Passing Etiquette: Keep to the right and pass on the left. When overtaking another rider, announce your presence by calling out “On your left” to alert them.
- Be Predictable: Maintain a steady pace and avoid sudden movements so others can anticipate your actions.
- Hazards & Alerts: Use verbal and hand signals to warn fellow riders about hazards such as potholes, debris, or sudden stops. Calling out “Stopping,” “Glass,” “Hole,” or pointing to obstacles can help prevent accidents.
- Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with the event’s emergency protocols and note the locations of Course Marshals in case you need assistance.
By following these guidelines, you contribute to a safer and more enjoyable ride for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation—ride safe, have fun, and enjoy the Redbud Classic!
